Can LawStream help me organize documents associated with my files?

Yes: LawStream provides a solution that might assist you in organizing the documents stored on your office’s network.

Click on the "Organize Documents and Variables" pushbutton in the File/Matter window, to display the window for organizing documents for a file. That window will let you create a list of all documents associated with any file. The documents can be of any type, and any document can be opened by double-clicking on an item in the list of that file's documents. Along with that easy way to organize and open documents, LawStream also offers extra information that can be helpful for managing document flow in an office, as well as brief notes relating to the status and other key information about each document.
And, if you have an entire folder of documents that you have already collected for a file, just click the "Find Folder of Documents for client/file" pushbutton, and then tell LawStream the default location for documents for that file. LawStream will even create a list of all the files in the folder you specify, and let you quickly add any of those documents to your list of active documents for the file.

How extensive are LawStream's billing functions?

Very extensive! We believe we’ve been able to satisfy virtually all the needs of our users, for their diverse needs and styles of practice.

For example, LawStream provides different rates for each billing personnel (attorney, lawyer, paralegal, etc.), and reference to trust transactions with each invoice. Trust balances can be credited with new bills as bills are posted to the general ledger. LawStream also offers fixed-fee billing (generally and by time code), and contingency billing.

Billing rates can be set for a file, for individual lawyers, and for individual time-code types. And if that isn’t enough, LawStream allows an unlimited number of different billing rates for an unlimited number of timekeepers for each file!

Each LawStream bill can show a previous balance, the current total amount of the bill, and any trust transfer being applied toward the balance owing. Because LawStream can integrate accounting with timekeeping and billing, trust transfers shown on bills can be integrated with the records maintained in LawStream for bank and file/matter balances.More details...

Will LawStream work on computers using OS X and Windows?

Yes: LawStream works on Macs using OS X, and on PCs using Windows. It can even work on mixed networks, with the proper network arrangements. If you do have a mixed environment (Macs and PCs accessing the office’s shared data file at the same time), then you must be careful to set up your network access properly. Each type of computer (Mac or PC) would need its own LawStream program software (for Windows or OS X), and the office data file would be stored on a shared area of the network. When Windows and OS X LawStream packages are accessing the data file concurrently, the data file must be stored on a Windows PC. If you (or a network guru, or someone in your office) can create a share-point on a PC where all LawStream users (with Macs or PCs) can have full read-write access to that shared data file, then you will be able to use LawStream in a mixed network environment.More details...
